Cold Therapy, Ice Therapy & Cryotherapy Machine injuries

Ice therapy machines are quasi-medical devices used by patients following surgical procedures to ones shoulder, elbow, foot, ankle, knee, and low back injuries.  Recent FDA report of adverse events indicate that extended use of an ice therapy machine has been linked to permanent nerve damage, serious skin and tissue injuries similar to trench foot or frost bite often requiring skin grafts, surgery and even amputation.

Cold Therapy - Types of Injuries

  1. Nerve damage. Objective tests, such as the electroencephalogram (EEG) test, can be performed to confirm damage in absence of visible injury.
  2. Skin Necrosis - The death of the skin and tissue due to extreme cold temperatures over a prolonged period.
  3. Nerve and skin damage. Skin damage will have visible injuries, such as frostbite.
  4. Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) Syndrome
  5. Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS).

Skin Necrosis and Cold Therapy Machine Injuries

When used for over-estimated amounts of time, cold therapy cryotherapy units can lead to serious injuries. Injuries include but are not limited to: hypothermia, permanent nerve loss, severe skin damage, and amputation. These cold therapy devices are often improperly labeled and do not include warnings for excessive use. They violate FDA regulations and create severe pain for patients who misuse them.

Patients may be left with permanent nerve loss, skin necrosis and when their skin is lost, they must resort to skin grafts. These cold therapy machines or cryotherapy machines can be dangerous and do not include proper instructions for amount of exposure to such near freezing cold water. The three most common machines leading to such damage are the: Polar Care 500 by Breg Inc.,and the EBIce by EBIce Patient Care Inc. No FDA recall of ice therapy or cold therapy cryotherapy devices has begun.Cold therapy nerve and skin damage injuries and resulting skin necrosis can result at above freezing temperatures. Some ice therapy victims have reported damage after using cold therapy devices in the 45-55 degree range.
